The way you handle bottled oxygen has just changed.

Features and Benefits
The O2BOSS™ Bottled Oxygen Safety System was developed to fulfill a need identified in the EMS industry to safely contain compressed oxygen cylinders in rescue vehicles. There have been a number of documented cases in which oxygen cylinders have become deadly projectiles within a rescue vehicle involved in an accident or sudden stop which resulted in serious injury, and in some cases, contributed to the death of the patient or the EMS worker. The US National Safety Council reports that there have been an increasing number of accidents involving emergency vehicles (and based on a study conducted in 1999) the Council estimates that 10% to 24% of all ambulances on the road (50,000 in the US alone) become involved in accidents yearly.

Pacific Safety Products Inc. (PSP) embarked on a three year project to develop a system to safely store and transport compressed oxygen as well as make it easier to use in the field. The primary design concern was to develop a system that was able to withstand 25 G’s of force exerted on the unit from any direction.

Taking a systems approach in the design and engineering phase, PSP addressed the safety issues inherent through each stage of use of bottled oxygen by an EMS Professional, namely:
  • In-vehicle storage
  • Transport to scene
  • Use at scene
  • Transport back to vehicle
  • Storage back into vehicle
The O2BOSS™ or Bottled Oxygen Safety System is a product that assists in the safe and ergonomic use of portable medical oxygen. The system is comprised of the following four sub systems.

  1. Transport Unit. The Transport Unit consists of a frame that accepts an oxygen cylinder and has ergonomic handles for carrying and utilizing the oxygen. Transport Units are available in two models to accommodate the two different sizes of oxygen cylinders, “D” and “E”. Other features such as the “Bipod Leg System”, the built in “Gauge Guard” and the “Anti-Rotate Pad” make the Transport Unit a versatile and cost-saving system.
  2. Wall Mount Unit. The Wall Mount Unit provides a secure method of storing the Transport Unit in a vehicle or facility. The Wall Mount Unit comes in Flat Mount and Angle Mount configurations to allow for most any installation scenario. The Transport Unit quickly latches to and releases from the Wall Mount Unit for easy deployment in emergency situations.
  3. Cot Mount Unit. The Cot Mount Unit provides a secure method of storing the Transport Unit on a cot. The Cot Mount attaches to the frame rail of most commercially available cots. The Transport Unit quickly latches to and releases from the Cot Mount Unit for easy deployment in emergency situations.
  4. Transport Unit Storage Box. The Transport Unit Storage Box provides a streamlined solution for storing the Transport Unit into externally accessible cabinets in the emergency vehicle and thus optimize the use of valuable storage space.

Certification:

The O2BOSS™ system has been designed to meet or exceed all North American Standards for securing compressed oxygen into emergency vehicles. This includes:

  • Ambulance Manufacturers Division Standard 003 Federal Specification KKK-1822-E
  • British Columbia Ambulance Service (BCAS) Ambulance Supply Specification
  • Ontario Provincial Land Ambulance and Emergency Response Vehicle Standard

Each one of these standards essentially requires that the unit, when mounted in a vehicle, restrains the oxygen tank and withstands forces equal to 25 times the weight of items it is intended to hold exerted in all directions.
